D Day Guest Speaker

The 8th grade class had the privilege of hearing a first-hand account of the D-Day Invasion.  Mr. Henry Hoop visited our school to share his experiences as an 18 year old soldier, who landed on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944.  His mission was to plant the explosive materials needed to rid the beach of underwater obstructions.  Mr. Hoop explained how the troops landed and how many pounds of gear they had to carry while trying to evade Nazi bullets.

Besides learning about D-Day in this special way, the students also enjoyed hearing Mr. Hoop’s account of life in the military and were surprised that men did not have a choice about joining.  He also explained why he received each of his many medals.

The 8th graders unanimously agreed that Mr. Hoop’s recounting of his time in the military and particularly D-Day was a wonderful way to learn history.
