The Patriot’s Pen is an annual contest sponsored by the VFW throughout the country for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Last fall the students were presented with this year’s topic, ”What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers” and were asked to write a 300 word or less essay about it. On Saturday , February 10, our local VFW post 1079 and its Women’s Auxillary held a luncheon to present awards to the participating students from various local schools.
Representing St. Mary were first place winner, Alyze Hanson, and second place winner, Andy Brown., who are in the 7th grade. Along with other winners, Alyze proudly read her composition for the audience. The students each received awards from Mayor Holly Brinda, the county commisioners. and Senator Sherrod Brown. In addition, their efforts earned them a cash prize and a hand-made valentine.
St. Mary School has been a proud participant in this competion for many years. We feel it is important for our students to reflect on the sacrifices that were made in the founding of our nation and continue to be made to ensure our freedom and safety. We thank the VFW for sponsoring this competition along with the Voice of Democracy for high school students.
